Results & when to seek advice

Normal: Ferritin concentration within the normal range

This result indicates that your ferritin level is within the normal range. This suggests that your body's iron stores are likely to be adequate and there is no indication of iron deficiency based on this test alone.

Abnormal: Low ferritin concentration

This result indicates that your ferritin level is lower than the normal range, which may suggest iron deficiency. We recommend discussing your result with your GP or another healthcare professional, who may advise further assessment or testing.

Invalid: Test error – repeat with a new test

The control line (C) did not appear, which means the test is invalid and the result cannot be interpreted.

Why is it important?

Your body needs iron to make healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells contain a substance called haemoglobin, which transports oxygen around the body. Iron is also important for healthy muscles, bone marrow and organ function. Anaemia is caused by lack of haemoglobin. Iron deficiency is caused by lack of iron. Iron deficiency with anaemia is caused by both a lack of iron and a lack of haemoglobin. The amount of iron you need is:• 8.7mg a day for men aged 19 and over• 14.8mg a day for women aged 19 to 49• 8.7mg a day for women aged 50 and over. Women having periods after the age of 50 may need the same amount of iron as women aged 19 to 49.
